Empress Old Fashioned

Empress Old Fashioned

This Empress Old Fashioned keeps the classic spirit-forward structure of the traditional cocktail but adds a stunning lavender-purple hue and gentle floral botanicals from Empress 1908 Gin. Smooth, lightly sweet, and visually captivating—this drink is perfect for evenings when you want something refined and modern.

✨ Ingredients (1 Cocktail)

For the Cocktail

  • 2 oz Empress 1908 Gin

  • ½ oz simple syrup (1:1 sugar to water), adjust to taste

  • 2–3 dashes orange bitters

  • 1–2 dashes Aromatic bitters (Angostura-style), optional for depth

  • 1 large clear ice cube or several small cubes

For Garnish

  • Orange peel (wide strip, fresh)

  • Lemon peel (optional, for added brightness)

  • Edible flowers or lavender sprig (optional, elegant finish)

✨ Instructions

1. Prepare Your Glass

  1. Use a chilled Old Fashioned glass or short rocks glass.

  2. Add the large clear ice cube to keep the drink cold without diluting too quickly.

2. Build the Cocktail

  1. In a mixing glass, combine:

    • 2 oz Empress 1908 Gin

    • ½ oz simple syrup

    • 2–3 dashes orange bitters

    • (Optional) 1–2 dashes aromatic bitters

  2. Add ice and stir for 20–25 seconds until well chilled.

    • Over-stirring will dilute; under-stirring will make it boozy and warm.

3. Strain and Serve

  1. Strain the chilled mixture into your prepared glass with the large ice cube.

  2. Express a strip of orange peel over the top:

    • Hold the peel over the drink and squeeze gently to release fragrant oils.

  3. Rub the peel lightly around the rim of the glass, then drop it into the drink.

  4. Optional: add a lemon peel twist or garnish with a small edible flower/lavender sprig for an elegant touch.

✨ Flavor Notes

  • Empress 1908 Gin brings a soft juniper base, grapefruit, tea botanicals, and its signature butterfly pea flower color.

  • The bitters and syrup balance the floral notes and give the cocktail a smooth, lightly sweet, aromatic profile.

  • Color will stay a deep indigo-violet unless lemon peel or citrus juice is added (which shifts it toward pink).

✨ Tips for the Perfect Empress Old Fashioned

  • Use clear ice: enhances presentation and melts more slowly.

  • Adjust sweetness:

    • ¼ oz syrup for a drier drink

    • Up to ¾ oz for a smoother, sweeter sip

  • Bitters selection matters:

    • Orange bitters highlight citrus botanicals

    • Aromatic bitters add warmth and complexity

    • Lavender or hibiscus bitters create a floral version

  • Avoid shaking: this drink should be silky, not cloudy.
